Introduction
Welcome to DictateDash. Your privacy is critically important to us. This Privacy Policy outlines our commitment to your privacy and explains the data practices for the DictateDash website (www.dictatedash.com
) and the DictateDash desktop application ("the Application").
Our guiding principle is to collect the minimum amount of information necessary to provide and improve our services. This policy is divided into two main sections: one covering our Website, and one covering our Application.
Part 1: The DictateDash Website
This section applies to information collected when you visit www.dictatedash.com
.
Information We Collect
- Information You Voluntarily Provide: When you subscribe to our mailing list or use our contact form, we collect the information you provide, such as your name, email address, and the content of your message.
- Information Collected Automatically: When you visit our website, we use our product analytics platform, PostHog, to automatically collect technical information to help us understand how our site is used. This information includes your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, pages visited, and other usage data. This data is essential for security and for improving our service.
How We Use This Information
- To send periodic emails with updates about DictateDash if you have opted-in to our mailing list.
- To respond to your inquiries submitted through our contact form.
- To analyze website traffic, understand user behavior, and improve our website's content and user experience.
- To protect our services from spam and abuse.
Part 2: The DictateDash Desktop Application
This section applies to the DictateDash software you install on your Windows computer.
Our Core Privacy Promise: Your Voice is Your Own
We do not collect, record, store, or have access to your audio recordings or the resulting text transcripts. The Application is designed so that your sensitive data is controlled entirely by you.
How Your Data is Handled
- Local Models (e.g., Whisper, Vosk): When you use a local speech-to-text model, all audio processing happens entirely on your computer. Your voice data and transcripts do not leave your machine as part of this process.
- Cloud Models & API Keys (e.g., OpenAI, Groq): When you use a cloud provider, you must provide your own API key for that service. The Application sends your audio directly from your computer to the cloud provider you have chosen. Important: This data transfer is subject to the privacy policy of that third-party provider. We strongly recommend you review their policies. Your API keys are stored locally on your computer, and we do not have access to them.
- Application Updates: The Application may periodically check our servers to see if a new version is available for download. This process is anonymous and does not transmit any personal data.
Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies on our website to help us analyze user behavior with our analytics platform, PostHog. Cookies help us understand how users interact with our site over multiple visits, which is crucial for improving our service. You can manage your cookie preferences through your browser's settings.
Data Sharing and Our Third-Party Service Providers
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to others. We share data only with trusted third parties who assist us in operating our services. Our key providers are:
- Netlify: For hosting our website and processing our mailing list and contact form submissions.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): For securely hosting and delivering the Application software file when you initiate a download.
- PostHog: For providing our website analytics, helping us understand user engagement and improve our platform.
- Cloud Speech-to-Text Providers: As described in Part 2, when you configure the Application to use a cloud service, your audio is sent directly to the provider you select.
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information we handle. For the Application, sensitive data like API keys are stored on your local device. However, no electronic storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
